Fall 2025
This classroom-based driver’s education course provides the foundation of safe, lawful, and responsible driving. Through interactive lessons, real-world scenarios, and evidence-based instruction, students learn traffic laws, hazard recognition, risk management, and decision-making skills essential for novice drivers. The course emphasizes defensive driving, distraction and impairment prevention, and the attitudes and behaviors that reduce crash risk.
Learning objectives:
- Explain key state and federal traffic laws, road signs, and right-of-way rules
- Identify common driving hazards and apply strategies for hazard detection and avoidance
- Demonstrate safe decision-making in complex traffic situations using risk-management frameworks
- Explain the effects of impairment (alcohol, drugs, fatigue, medications) and distraction on driving performance
- Describe basic vehicle systems and routine maintenance that affect safety
- Apply strategies for sharing the road with vulnerable users (pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists)
- Prepare for the written permit/license exam and for responsible behind-the-wheel practice
